To others, it brings visualizations of classic statues, beautiful temples, and mythological gods. The Roman Empire was all of that and more. The saying, â€Å"Rome wasn’t built in a day† is true and its fall and decline happened gradually as well. Ancient Rome has inspired volumes of historical works, theatrical plays, and even movies in more recent times. More specifically, its fall and decline have fascinated people for centuries and there are harbingers who warn of current political trends that mimic Rome’s mistakes. Only a study of history could analyze the many theories for its ultimate failure. An understanding of the heights the Roman Empire reached is necessary to realize how great its fall was. Rome was a small village on Italy’s peninsula that had a location easy to defend with great potential for trade access. It was founded in 753 B.C.E. and began to develop as a city in 575 B.C.E. with construction of streets and temples. As shrewd politicians, diplomats, and wise businessmen, Romans expanded the city and added other communities with alliances or conquest. The historian Livy, detailed the moral values that helped Rome expand, such as determination, duty, courage, and military discipline (Spielvogel 120). Rome crushed revolts and continued to reach outward until Italy was under control, and eventually, the western Mediterranean. The air within Celestial Bias’s secluded home was perfumed with the foreign scent of apples. The immigrant had been living in Kalamazoo for more than 20 years when he met a speaker from his native land who had come to the US to lecture; he drove out to the city hear this man. The crowd’s questions during the open forum centered on Bias’s home country. Ovenbird Canton’s â€Å"The Scent of Apples† centers on the absence of the familiarity of home or the characteristics of what makes a place so, for example: for a Filipino Collections AIBO there is abundance of apple trees, while for the American men who went out to war there is the absence of great icy winds and the promise of winter; additionally the way Santos describes the setting further exemplifies this nostalgia and isolation from home. The absence of home is introduced by Canton’s description of the, which creates a somber tone by describing the memory their son who had gone away to war. He uses that setting, the boy being away for war, to establish exile or loneliness; additionally he adds the boys absence from the familiar icy winds, changing golden leaves, and the fragrance of apples to further isolate the parent’s from their son. This description when Juxtaposed to Bias’s situation, being an immigrant surrounded by apple trees in an isolated farm in the US, intensifies the concept of exile in a foreign place. During the lecture, the narrator receives a lot of questions about his home country, which he describes had become a lost country to his American audience. Here his audience was composed of mostly women who had lost contact with the men deployed in the Philippines. Their situation is parallel to Bias’s, with his family closing their gates after him and his loss of contact with any Filipino for the past years, which emphasizes his isolation. Juxtaposing Ruth with the narrator’s commentary on the differences of Filipino and American women, and Bias’s description of Filipino women entails that there may be no differences between these groups of women at all. To emphasize Remarking on Ruth being described like a Filipino, she stays with AIBO even on the brink of death, while she herself was pregnant. The she maybe home that he finds in the US. In relation to the setting, his link to the Philippines no longer persists and the dinner with narrator was the Bias’s soiree with his old home, but his being released back into the cold and dark at the end implies that AIBO still Bias’s shanty home emphasizes this isolation in exile as well, since the house is located alone amidst an apple orchard miles away from the city. The narrator described the trip from Kalamazoo to the farm to be interminable; they disappeared wrought thickets, passed narrow lanes with unattractive, barren land covered in weeds, dead leaves and dry earth. Santos meaner to represent Bias’s distance from home through the interminable trip; furthermore the barren land, narrow lanes and weeds represent Bias’s affiliations in the Philippines – he no longer had any contact with his family and he has not talked to other Filipinos in years. The apple trees in the distance emphasize his being in a foreign place. The reader is reminded of this when AIBO comments on the beauty of autumn to which the narrator replies, â€Å"No such thing in our own country’ and the narrator reflects on the unkind comment and how AIBO must have avoided this fact for fear of being reminded of his exile. Once they arrive at the house the narrator notices how the house was ready to crumble. The inside was barren and decked with second-hand furniture and, the scent of apples pervaded he air – describing how even in his own home there is the reminder that he is a foreigner. In contrast to his home in the Philippine, biggest one in the Visalia town, which shunned him. Santos also uses autumn to influence the tone of the story. He opens the first paragraph with the old couple; he uses the description of icy winds, ghostly feet of fallen leaves and coming of down of the cold to nuance the theme of loneliness and abandonment. The autumn, being a season of fallen leaves and cold weather imposes transitory feeling brought by being away from someone. He also this when AIBO brings the narrator home for dinner the setting is described to be ineffectual and not too cold, which implicates a more positive mood in the text. Santos uses the coming winter, the cold and the dark to further highlight the feeling of abandonment hen the narrator finally says goodbye to AIBO, remarking that they would probably never see each other again. Ovenbird Santos brings to his audience the sentiments of nostalgia. The well-crafted short, â€Å"the Scent of Apples† very well articulates the loneliness of an immigrant. He does this through how he establishes the setting, through how he sets up the stage for the characters to move around and for the audience to get better feel of what Santos intended to impart. Garment Workers of Bangladesh Mackenzie Dickson The Institute for Global Labour and Human Rights is a non-profits human rights organization that recognizes and defends the basic human rights of labor workers globally. Originally as the National Labor Committee, the organization was founded in 1981 and has locations in numerous locations in the United States as well as South Asia. Based on the previous patterns, this number has likely increased considering the most recent poverty headcount ratio at national poverty lines is about seven years old. In 2015 the World Bank reported Bangladeshs Gross National Income (GNI) as roughly $1,190; United States GNI is about 47 times that.   (World Bank Group). Bangladeshs garment industry was worth about 20 billion U.S. dollars in 2013, making it the second largest clothing supplier of the world market, following China (Stotz). Bangladeshs economy is based on the success of the garment industry. The business garment factorys have with U.S . corporations like Wal-Mart, Disney, Gap, and Old Navy are crucial to the countrys economic growth and free trade. These large wealthy corporations do not want to pay, hence why the corporations employ factories in poverty stricken countries like Bangladesh. The four-part short series Hidden Face of Globalization created by The Institute for Global Labour and Human Rights interviews the women of Bangladeshi garment factories and asks the question: Why are the basic human rights of the women who made the product and maintain the global economy not protected? The series focuses on the young women between the ages 16 to 25 who make up 80% of the 1.8 million garment factory workers in Bangladesh (Hidden Face of Globalization). The young women work from eight in the morning until ten or eleven at night, seven days a week. Overtime is mandatory and the workers are often forced to work up to twenty hours when there is a rush to produce an order. The women are not allowed to speak while working, are allowed only two trips to the bathroom, and are fired around the age of 30. If the workers question their inhumane treatment, unsafe factory conditions, or unionizing the women are at risk of verbal assault, physical abuse, imprisonment, and/or losing their job (Hidden Face of Globalization).Garment workers bargain; they train themselves to be faster than the rest and often times report on others thinking about unionizing to achieve a higher pay (39, Ahmed). However, questioning wages and worker benefits has proven ineffective because the commission was made up of state representatives who were supposed to advocate for worker interests. The spatial segregation of the sexes in the factory is an outward expression of gendered wage segregation with the few men at the top having jobs with more control and higher wages (Ahmed, 40). After recognizing they have fallen subject to gender hierarchy, the women drop their concerns and attempts to unionize in fear of being sexually assaulted or harassed and give up searching for a voice on the factory floor (Ahmed, 40). The job takes a toll on the womens home life. Because of their grueling days at work, they do not have time for themselves or their families; the children are often left alone for long hours at a time and the women dont have time to maintain healthy relationships with family members (Hidden Face of Globalization). The extreme poverty the workers return home too is discussed in the series. The women make as little as 11 to 17 cents an hour, well below the minimum wage; as a result, they and their families are forced to live and share will others who live below the poverty line. Privacy is non-existent. The small rooms are full of sometimes as many as ten people and are built from scraps. The whole community shares a small gas stove, water pump, and a single out-house (Hidden Face of Globalization). The 70s brought an increase of women into the work force, specifically export-based industries such as the garment industry and other labor-intensive industries that rely on low-cost produc tion to maintain competitiveness (Beneria, 114). Corporations like Disney and Wall-mart are dependant of womens labor to sustain their part in the world market. Labor-intensive industries are reliant of countries like Bangladesh that are sustained by patriarchal gender norms and are reproduced in the workplace by the concerted efforts of employers and government policy (Beneria, 114). The factory workers that supplied Disney garments appealed to Disney asking for a pay raise. The women said if they were paid 35 cents rather than the 11-17 cents their quality of life would increase significantly, letting them live in poverty instead of below the poverty line (Hidden Face of Globalization). The women asked Disney to respect their basic human rights; the women wanted safe working conditions, basic pay raise, days off, and regulated hours. As a result the women lost their jobs. Eliot’s fascination with the modern city could stem from the fact that he was an American, and so when he moved to England in 1915, the modern city was a part of England of which he was in awe. Eliot was also influenced by the French poet, Charles Baudelaire who explored the poetic possibilities of â€Å"the more sordid aspects of the modern metropolis.† I believe that this is what Eliot is doing in Preludes; I believe he is exploring the poetic possibilities of the city. In ‘Preludes’, Eliot begins the poem with â€Å"The winter evening settles down / With smell of steaks in passageways / Six o’clock.† Here, Eliot has personified the weather and made wide use of sibilance. By using sibilance, he makes the â€Å"passageways† seem eerie and mysterious. Eliot then continues with â€Å"The burnt-out ends of smoky days / And now a gusty shower wraps.† These two lines suggest endings, as life is firstly compared to a cigarette, where it burns away to nothing and then the line â€Å"And now a gusty shower wraps† makes use of pathetic fallacy, as the turbulent day in the city is over, just like the â€Å"gusty shower† has finished.
